Shelter/Rescue animals are The Best

And so are the people who do the work (that never ends) at the animal shelters.

Two minutes and fifty-two seconds of people who have just fallen in love, or are about to:
Richmond (Virginia) Animal League's Operation Silent Night.  Husband and I have vowed never to have any but a shelter or rescue animal. Or perhaps a barn cat who'd like to have the best of both worlds.

We need a cat.
The mice are, nightly, holding fancy dress balls in my house, in celebration of MiMau's demise. We need an orphan kitty who knows how to hunt. I've been spending time on Petfinder, but Husband says the farmers over the hill probably have barns full of cats they'd be happy to give up. When I drive past the farms, I slow down and watch carefully. All the cats are smart, staying inside in the warm barn, not outdoors gracefully stretching and washing hind legs, displaying themselves for adoption.

It's only a matter of time.

All of our pets have come from shelters including our present feline Miss Kitty.

I have two Siamese cats that are the perfect pets...find one or two if possible, you'll never regret it. There is a adoption center for them someplace in Virginia, maybe one near you.

Blue Ridge, I'm not in Virginia. That video came from a friend of mine who lives there and volunteers at RAL. Siamese? Really? All I've ever heard about Siamese is that they're not affectionate and they're yowly. That said, however . . . any pet of my own would be The Perfect Pet. That's the way I'm built. :-P

Teary video for me. I wonder how many of these lucky animals stayed with the families after the holidays. Every one of them, I hope.

At one point we had four rescued kitties. Two are gone now but all have been dears and are the best!

Linda, these are the ones that JUST went home. The vast majority of last year's adoptees remained safe in their homes.

I was thinking of getting another cat when a mouse appeared in my place. But the mouse has since moved on (to another apartment?), though I still consider it, especially when the Humane Society has them 'on sale' (due to overruns of animals). Maybe after I put the Christmas ornaments away - it has been enjoyable being able to put them up on a tree for the first time in years :)

I'm so grateful for rescue groups and those who work in them.

All of the cats we've ever had have come from shelters or from rescue organizations and I can't begin to express the joy we've had from them.

Most of our cats have been throwaways: our first cat Freddie was part of a litter dumped in a box on a freeway exit; Timmy and Gus and their three littermates were put in a box and thrown into a junkyard when only three weeks old; Maggie was relinquished to a rescue group by a Beverly HIlls breeder (of Bombay cats) because she was an ugly kitten (who grew into a beautiful cat); Marina was abandoned by two families -- one because they had a baby who was allergic to cats and one because they thought she was "too needy, wanting too much attention." SweetPea was found, only a few weeks old, wandering alone in the streets of Casa Grande and Hamish, our newest addition, was born on a sidewalk after his mother was thrown from a passing car. Such sad beginnings changed to happy lives, thanks to rescue organizations! We give all our Christmas present money to such groups to help the good work that they do.

Best of luck in finding just the right cat, June! I agree with the suggestion that you get two -- possibly littermates. You'll be in for years of love and joy!

They've started advertising about animals that get tossed over the holidays. Last night on the news, the SPCA was begging people not to give animals for Christmas and to wait till after the holidays and pick one up from a shelter if they really wanted one. THOUSANDS end up in shelters, many because owners can't or can't be bothered to find a boarding kennel and don't want to take their pets on holiday. How sad is that. They only have 7 days and then get euthanised, unless some other non-kill shelter or foster carer picks them up. I know you're going to find your kitty soon and easily.

Have a great Christmas and New Year, June! Good health and happy walks! Big hug X

The best cats seem to come to us. Their mama already taught them what to do with a mouse. Our two indoor cats haven't a clue. The mouse they found was a traumatized bundle in the morning and walked away when we put him outside. One of these was a shelter fellow, the other a five week old dumped or lost by mama in a parking lot. Our outdoor cat would teach them, but outdoors, only. Since there is no mouse school for cats we'll just put the trembling little bundles out and hope they avoid the outdoor cat.

Oh, that makes me laugh in sympathy for the poor little mousie. All of my adult-owned cats have found me, rather than my finding them, and they've all been such treasures.

I absolutely agree about some cats being hunters and others being unaware that they are supposed to be Feared Killers Of Rodents. MiMau set the bar pretty high for that behavior...

Anonymous, thank you for the info about BriansHome. I went and looked around until my heart started to crack a little bit. Our county has SO MANY kitties, though, that I feel as if it would be unfair to truck a kitty from parts unknown. Husband isn't ready yet, I think. Me, I'm starting to stalk cats crossing the country roads into fields . . . stopping the car . . . calling them . . . watching them run away, a terrified look on their furry little faces. "Who's the crazy woman?"
