Why I don't put out birdfeeders, illustrated

You'll need to enlarge these to get it.

It would be a little unfair to the birds, wouldn't it?

You are right--I have feeders but they are hanging on the porch. You can see the porch in my profile picture. So our two cats are not able to get to them--actually we have only one cat now--Soot died in April. She was the hunter and to my knowledge didn't climb trees only the side of the house..she used to bring home moles and mice and chipmunks--liked that red meat. Maybe that's why she died at 14--not enough fish and fowl in her diet! Her heart did give out and we had to put her down.

Are the oranges just laid on the branches with no attachement to keep them from falling and blowing out of the tree?

I'm sorry--should have read comments on my blog before asking about the oranges again. I see it is a plum tree not a cherry--was using the bark as a clue. LOL And I also see the technique using little twiglets on the tree--shall have to try that.

I grew up in Glens Falls and my sister is still in Saratoga. We traveled all over the State but trips to Ti or into the Adirondacks on Sunday were the habit in our family. I truly love NY and in some ways miss it--glad my sister is still there--she and I still get in the car and ride those roads and remember our rides as kids. Not as often with gas prices up, alas1

I could just make out a stealthy grey shadow if I squinted .... she's good !
We had one that brought moles and shrews home and even once , memorably , a young rabbit .( Though she hid behind me and peeked nervously when a spider the size of a dinner plate wandered in one afternoon .Just when I could have done with her help!)

Yep. Porch would be better.

She knows how to camouflage really well - also seems to know where the bird bounty is.

My fur-children like to lay beneath the feeders in the event one of the feathered diners should loose their footing. Scarlet in particular is very indignant when an avian diner answers the call of nature--right on top of her head!

Wow.. is that a dwarft plum tree and orange halves.. or a incredibly large cat? The perspective makes her look enormous!

That little rascal.

Our Luna literally launches herself at our living room window to get at the birds. I have no doubt that she would catch and kill a great number if she were given the opportunity. The fact that we live on the 3rd floor wouldn't faze her a bit. Maybe I should buy her a cape before I let her outside....no I'm thinking a halter and leash might be a better idea. That will keep everyone safe and me sane.

Blessings,
Carolynn

Hah, Hilary! It's the perspective. She was about twelve feet off the ground. She's not a big cat at all.

Oh how cute. Yes, it would be unfair.

Popped over from Smitten Image, love your naughty cat.......the stinker.
Love your philosophy, too.

Lurking with intent methinks.

I see the cat lurking in the tree - do you also have marauding bears in the woods as we do?

Cats are hunters and killers, there's no getting away from it. In my garden cats are kept away by the scent of a smelly old dog. I set him on cats that stray in but he never even sees them and always runs off in the wrong direction.

And those that he comes across in the road frighten him to death, in spite of his size.

Oh my! Yes, I see exactly why you don't put feeders out there!

Oh my word! I've never seen a cat in a tree...

It's just incredible!
