Eastern coyote

Image from leslieland.com

A couple of weeks ago I stood at the window and watched a coyote trotting back and forth, back and forth, way down at the top of the next lower field. It appeared that he was trying to find the rabbit that had left a scent trail, and was having a far easier time finding the beginning of the trail than the pot of golden bunny at the end of it.
The coyotes have been yelling loudly and . . . closely! in the middle of the night recently. No wonder the dogs and cat don't want to stay outside for long once dark has descended.
Devils out there, Mom!
I like living where I see these sights.
It's like having a PBS Nature episode every day, sometimes several times a day!

Now that you mention it, I haven't noticed many coyotes lately, or deer. But my mother's car "met" a deer recently in Oklahoma.

Nice capture! I too wonder what it is he's smelling. Your line about the golden bunny made me smile.

We used to really enjoy watching wildlife in VT--our property abuts 300+ acres of open land. We saw coyotes, deer, turkey, foxes, the occasional moose, and even a bear. Then the town put in mountain bike trails with an access parking lot right behind our house. Different kind of wildlife now.

Use to love to hear the coyotes at night, but we don't have any here, kind of miss them.

Watch the Poodles - coyotes can lure dogs and kill them. Would your dogs chase? Hopefully not. I like to see them, too - for some reason, we rarely hear them howl. About a month ago when the females were in estrus, I was finding a lot of bloody scent markings.

I love the sounds they make down on the golf course below us. Such social cackling and screaming. I smile when they wake me with their partying. (We're two miles from Apple headquarters, so we're not that isolated, but we are on the edge of open space preserve).

I LOVE seeing and hearing these things too - albeit from a safe distance. We've been hearing coyotes really close to the house the last few nights too.

Can't wait to hear your cat & dog tale....

How wonderful, I would love to hear the call of Coyotes, alas there is no such occurance in kent, UK, just the unholy scream of foxes. Always sounds like a baby in pain and makes my solar plexes contract.

We have the SW coyotes here in AZ. They are wonderfully exhilarating! There is just something so thrilling about their wildness...

Somewhere in my mind the song "The Circle of Life" from the Lion King is playing!

Loved the post!

Barb, the poodles don't even hear the coyotes yipping these days. Angus would've been the only one who ever would've chased one, and he learned better.
Crone, here they say that a bobcat makes sounds like a baby crying and a fox's scream sounds like a woman screaming. I don't know that I've ever heard a bobcat, but I have heard a fox. Doesn't sound like a baby or a woman to me: sounds like something unearthly. And yes indeed, it raises the hair on the back of my neck!

We have coyotes here.. right in the middle of suburbia. Occasionally they're seen on our street making their way back to the park. They and I have lived in the same space for 28 years and I've yet to see one.

We hear coyotes now and then but haven't seen any. I, too, love living close to Nature!
