Night magic

It has been a beautiful week, sunshiny and exactly the right combination of warm and cool, thoroughly amazing weather for this time of year. Had I known, last October and November, that the winter would be so pleasantly painless, I would have been a far happier woman for all these months.

A few nights ago I got in bed and spent a long time lying in the dark looking through the windows at the stars. The night sky was so clear, and the stars so bright that night! When I was little, bright stars in the black night sky did the same thing to me as thoughts of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy: they gave me physical thrills, chills that ran from the top of my scalp to my heels, accompanied by nearly audible harp glissandi. I imagined other people out there in the far far places standing in their back yards, looking at their night skies, thinking of the possibility of someone else in the far away mysterious spaces that they watched. Magic!

The other night as I lay in my bed, and watched the fairy lights twinkling way up in the far far dark, I felt, for a second, the same feeling of excited possibility . . . the thought that what I know of life and what I hear from other people about life is not all there is to Life, not all there is at all.
I felt, for just a few quickly passing seconds . . . Magic.

Love that :)

When I was young, I thought other countries were in the clouds since you had to get in a plane to fly there. I'd lie in my garden and think about the people living there and wonder why they didn't fall down. I know, I know. I was a weird kid, probably because I ate too much grass and dog bikkies.

June I delighted in every word....and felt the shivers of 'magic'. Just beautiful.

Lovely; I was confused for a bit by the sentence that began
"When I was little bright stars in the black night sky ..." but I finaLLy figured it out. Physicists tell us that all the atoms heavier than (I believe its iron) are formed in supernova eXplosions, so in a little way a little of ourselves were once very bright star bursts. And not orange Starbursts, I dislike those ones.

One of my favorite childhood memories was to lay on the grass at night viewing the stars. Can't wait to lay in a hammock under a dark dark sky. I've been pondering the placement of an ancient metal glider(which lets down into a bed) in the field just for the purpose of viewing stars in a dark dark sky. I think you made up my mind...wished we lived closer June!

I love looking at the night sky when I'm away from town. Your description took me there, perfectly. Yes, it's not all there is to life, at all... thanks for the lovely post.

That's the key -- that even after all these years, you can still feel the magic. We walk the dog every night; we see the stars all the time, but it's only every once in a while that I pause and really look, and appreciate the wonder of it all. Tonight, because of your post, will be one of those nights. Thank you!

Wonderful - the night sky shows us infinite possibilities. I remember watching it as a child, too, and realizing that maybe I really wasn't the center of the universe. (Which was a good thing.)

Drive high over the mountains in the centre of Spain and you'll almost be there !
