Nonsense

Awake here in the middle of the night I read story after story about Newtown, Connecticut. I read the comments from people who blame President Obama, from a man who has legally owned and shot guns all his life, from victims of similar past horrors.

I don't know a thing about guns. I surely don't know why anybody needs a gun that can mow down fifty people in one fell swoop.
I think most gun owners are probably responsible.
But the guns get stolen, don't they? It happened yesterday.

Lots of people in this country are sick in the head. Lots of those people are young or stupid or both.
We start medicating children when they're just past toddler stage because nobody can be bothered to teach their kids how to act, how to control themselves.

Everybody's angry here and nobody's listening to other people. Everybody's shouting down the other's opinion, learning nothing.

I don't know the answer, but I know there are a lot of things here that are very very wrong.

I tried five times to write something that made more sense, but here in this asylum, nothing makes sense, so why should I?

The scene that stays in my heart is the one where all the parents are being matched up with their children and 20 sets were left. that's how they identified the children who were killed. What was that like for the parents who waited and were left. I can't even imagine. Goddess help us all and give us the courage to solve this uniquely American problem.

June an Mary, I have been in tears over this, as i am sure many many people have. But, until the Gun law is changed, and gradually the amount of free flowing arms have been got rid of out of the system, the same thing will keep happening.
It also takes sick and bent minds to perpertrate these actions, why is it so many times its young men? how do they not get noticed, surely they can not be perfctly normal all thier lives then wake up one morning and become monsters???
|ts all too much to figure out.

Go for a good walk June, then read about something else. Thats what i did anyway.

This one is especially hard because so many innocent children are dead. I can't help but put myself in the place of those parents. The tears just won't stop, and my heart is broken too. :-(

We live 9 minutes from clackamas town center where this tuesday a 20year old miserable abandoned at birth young man ended he lives of two people who did great good in their lives, hospice nurse 16 years for Kaiser, fellow who mentored, helped and got jobs in the news, tv and radio field to open a kiosk for his own particular type work, nearly killed a 15 year old from another country with no health insurance, nearly bled out would not life flight her to a trauma hospital, only thing that saved her was her robust health, age and a trauma nurse and doctor (sp?) that stabilized her, how is that for the state of health coverage in our country? nothing for that poor girl nearly died, finally got to OHSU trauma center and they worked on her for many hours, she nearly died right in that mall..We will never visit it again, always got the feeling it was spooky, creapy and the type of people who shopped there looked like they could have been in the movie Taxi--I go with my gut, if it walks like a duck, talks like a duck, it is a duck for god's sake and I flee for better ground..the shooting in Newton, CT is so horrible, innocent little angels waiting for kindergarten, the school principal who fought with her life several other teachers who fought so that yahoo, could shoot them all, & himself, they always shoot themself except in Aurora, Co that fellow is a stone cold killer, they are not mentally ill, but just plain out and out killers..My husband says they did not tell the truth about the mall it doesn't add up he was the highest award in the Army in the 60's for shooting, got many medals, he listened and I did to how it all unfolded they are not tellin the truth about it to shield the Mall from people shopping really? who cares about that mall to shop the souls of all who were killed are there, I truly believe it! We were visiting san diego when a crazy man walked into the MacDonalds in San Ysidro and murdered almost everyone then blew himself up, we were near the police and sheriff could not get there to save anyone due to rush hour traffic we were on the Coronado bridge and stuck our radio broadcast it all, our daughter was tiny, she was asleep thru it all, they tore the MacDonalds down completely, many lost their lives going to get some food on a hot friday evening..I think the mall where that shooting took place should close for a good long while, I don't care about christmas or hanukkah, kwanzza, etc. two people are dead for no reason and the shooter killed himself and wounded that sweet 15 year old waiting to join her Mom..what is it about business, the mall was closed for 4 days, all the retail people got screwed out of their wages, most have ptsd witnessing the horror..give me a break..in Newtown, CT gone is their little village for a fellow who in my opinion was a stone cold killer not mentally ill..just my opinion..

I say you mentioned on Crackeerhead Crumbles

the anonymous comment makes me sad and anxious
just more anger

we need much better detection and treatment for many mental illnesses and emotional disorders
and the stigma must stop so that people can and will get help

ansolutely no assualt type weapons should be allowed - period!
I'd like to ban all gun sales, if someone really needs to hunt they can rent for the day and then return the gun or be arrested
that is how I feel

thank you for opening up the subject in such a genuine way

We need to listen to each other and to our young people. Really listen.

My thoughts are with all those parents who left the scene alone. And for all those children whose innocence has been lost.

Such a tremendously painful time. I have to agree with what Dianne said. Despite our much more stringent gun laws in Canada, this kind of atrocity still happens but to a far lesser degree. People still die in car accidents but those numbers are far diminished with seat belt laws. You do what you can to minimize the risk. I'm sorry but the American right to bear arms just maximizes the chances of a day like yesterday. All those beautiful children and their dedicated educators. My heart is sick.

It's pretty clear there are no straight forward answers. On Friday, in China, 22 school children were stabbed (I believe all survived) by another mad man.

These events seems to happen more frequently everywhere in the world. Is it mental illness, a sense of entitlement of youth, or the influence of violence in television and video games? Who knows, not I.

All I can do is watch in horror and cry. But maybe tomorrow when I see a young person struggling I might think to stop and say a kind word.

Dr. Kathy McCoy said...

It's a heartbreaking tragedy and there are no easy answers. Yes, tighter gun laws and more available mental health resources could help. But each of us needs to be watchful in our own families and our own communities for young people who are mentally ill or lost or otherwise broken. We need to do our part in de-stigmatizing getting help for emotional and mental health problems and insisting that all people should have access to such help. That may prevent another angry, lost and hopeless young man from taking innocent lives.

IT's not about gun control, schools not having sufficient safety procedures, or keeping prayer out of schools. All this chatter takes away from the tragedy of losing 26 people. It's time to hug your loved ones and turn off the news. It's just too sad.

The tragic , terrible waste of it all ....

I can only agree that it's a terrible terrible thing, and hope that this latest in a long line of horrible tragedies motivates those in Washington -- and all of us -- to finally do something to prevent the next one, and the one after that.

I think all the violent video games, movies and TV have something to do with it. Violence is glorified.

I like the idea stated here about renting a gun for a day to "hunt"(a sick hobby in my opinion). I also feel that anyone on medication for psychosis should be on a federal list that restricts gun sales and caregivers should be required to demonstrate effective lock-ups for any firearms they may have.Concerned about your "Right" to bear arms? What about the rights of those 20 kids and their families? We need to change...one guy tries to blow up a plane and we all have to remove our shoes if we want to get on a plane. If you want to play with guns you need to make sure WE are safe.

All I know is we have to love one another. I grew up with two violent paranoid schizophrenics, of whom I was often afraid. I have had many losses in my life. I don't know that this is just an American problem. Look the twentieth century, what happened in "civilized" societies. look at what happens to black kids in the inner city. Look at what is happening in Syria. But I know life is a beautiful gift and I trust in God, in hope and in others.

I understand your pain and your inability to makes sense of this. How can a person who is reasonable understand something that is so unreasonable? No one needs to own these kinds of guns. No one. Why did this person not only have the guns, but the ammunition? Why would anyone have a stockpile of ammunition such as this?

My heart is broken on many levels. I can't even think of the carnage. As a mother, as a teacher, I am just plain horrified.

Thankfully, there were also many people who tried to stop this young man with a gun. We are left to be grateful for the good that remains.

It was a senseless tragedy. I don't believe that it was anybody's fault other then the person who decided to commit murder. There is evil in this world, and plenty of people who choose to do evil acts. I don't know what, or if there are answers to what ails our people and our nation. But I understand your thoughts and what you wrote here perfectly; and to me, they make sense, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. People who blame the guns are just being stupid. Like that old song says..."teach your children well". And, I believe that we need God within our hearts and in every other aspect of our lives. Without Him, we are powerless.
