This will reassure all of us who find it more painless to be cynics than to be bleeding hearts.
Further investigation revealed that the "kid" I was feeling sorry for was, in fact, a frequent flyer. And not a kid. The innocence was feigned.
Or else his memory's shot and every time is a brand new experience.
It's a good thing I'm not a cop.

Is there a term for the person who is someplace in between cynicism and a bleeding heart? I don't want to go through life with a cynical outlook...but I don't want to be thought a fool either. It's a balancing act, isn't it?
I think such a person would be a Realist.
I like to think I am one.
Every now and then I surprise myself.
I think this is a good example of: There are many sides to every story...
Well, I guess he's a criminal, now or at least wants to be!

Yah, realist, i think.
Some of us are optimistic realists, but seasoned with experience & sometimes cynicism.
Ah yes realism!I like to think I'm a realist too but sometimes I'm shocked, mainly by blatantly cynical acts of manipulation or greed.Funny old world out there!
Oh, I'd rather go, as you did, with a compassionate initial response - that may have to be balanced with realism once the facts are revealed - than a cynical, hard-hearted automatic one. I'm glad you told us, anyway, as that little question about becoming a criminal may have haunted us too!
Very nice pair of posts! I'm sure I'd have been moved by what you heard in the first -- and there's that innocent till proven guilty thing. I wouldn't want to be so cynical as to always believe the worst.
But I'd try to remain open to future revelations -- reserving judgment.
It doesn't sadden me because of how his looks can fool someone. What i am sadden about is, what happened to his early childhood to be like that. Who should be responsible for making this kid chose the lesser value in life. I know each one of us have kids, and i know you encourage and honed your kids with love. The world is not perfect but in our own little way, we start with our children. God bless you all...
As long as you have a soft spot in your heart, that's the important thing. It is a balancing act. We can still feel for them, while knowing that there are all kinds of folks out there, that know how to take advantage of any situation. Ahh, well.
That's alright then. cynicism proved right.
Damn, I would so like to think good of people . . . .
I think . . . .
You and me both...
