Dressing for the weather

This is the season of my dressing wrongly.
Summer is easy: It will be hot and humid. I wear sleeveless or short-sleeved things and keep a pair of shorts handy for throwing on as quickly as I can walk in the door from work and shed my slacks.  Winter's pretty easy too. I wear the same styles, except with longer sleeves, and more of them on any given day. And of course, the down coat is a daily given in real winter weather.

This morning when I was getting dressed, it was coolish, but humid. I put on a tank top and a sleeveless shirt with my slacks. Walked out the door: Perfect. Sometime during the middle of the day the temperature went down and humidity increased. By the time I got home I was thinking of hunting down a jacket before the dogs and I headed out for After Work Wander. The dogs weren't happy with the wind and the "63*F, feels like 59*F" (that's 15*C for the rest of you all over the world) either; it was a short Wander.
And that's just the outdoor weather.

In the morning, Jane's office is stuffy and warm. We could incubate hens' eggs in there without a light bulb. Occasionally she turns on the air conditioning and just as I stop mopping the sweat from my hairline, she begins to shiver like a chihuahua and turns it off again. In the afternoons, I have a little more control over the room temperature, but the a/c units are on the other side of the office, and blow directly onto my coworkers' desks. If the temperature's set for June Comfort, Paul and Aaron begin to lose sensation in their fingertips, so I try to go easy on them. I leave the temperature a little higher than I would like and I turn a fan on myself. Having come from the hotbox that is Jane's office, I usually give myself a stiff neck from the breeze, but the rest of my body's comfortable. I think the solution might be a wool muffler around my neck and my bare arms waving in the breeze.

When I left the office this afternoon, I left the a/c on because we'll have a meeting there this evening. I'll turn it off as soon as I get back there, and we should all be equally uncomfortable for the duration of the gathering. I'd better get out a jacket so I will be able to bear the dark and rainy 53* that will greet me when I head home again.

I need to move somewhere where the temperature is always 77*, dropping to 63* overnight. All the windows would be open, at least a little bit, all the time, and there would always be just a slight breeze.  And I'd like the sun to stay up until I will it into setting.  That would be perfect.

Not so very much to ask, is it?

If you can stand the humidity and like beer it's probably Darwin for you!

When you find that place...let me know! If I had to choose, I might just take cold winter over hot and humid summer though.

Sounds wonderful! I'd take cold weather over hot, and sunny weather over rain. Must be heaven.

Well, welcome to CO in summer! (the mountains, that is)

Ahhh, I wish. I have to admit I was happy to feel the end of that hot and humid spell we had last week - but I no longer look foreward to deep winter weather. IMO - we should get snow on december 20, and switch back to spring by january 2nd at the latest. (Sigh). It ain't gonna happen though. And the raccoon babies are as big as their parents and ready for a hard winter. ATB!

At least you can blame the weather! When I was at That Certain Age (that went on for YEARS!) I had to keep my office so chilly that people would emerge from meetings blue with cold. Deep winter was no problem to me then!

Von, I could stand the humidity, don't drink beer, but don't mind if others do. Find me a nice place, will you?

Wanda, your "cold winter" is so much shorter than my "cold winter," that I don't wonder you'd choose that. It's the grass-on-the-other-side-of-the-fence thing again, isn't it?

Linda, I fear what I hope for might be available only in Heaven. sigh...

Barb, my dream comes pretty close to being real right here where I am...in the summer...

Rusty, I agree: wintry weather has its place. That place is between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day.

Rachel, it could be hormones... I think it's more likely a lack of sunshine lately that's making me whine and cry about stuff like this.

I know exactly what you mean. Six of us girls worked in a very small space, one 'at that time of life' always warm, Julie and myself always freezing, the others always fairly warm. If we turned the air con on, it just spread germs around the building and we all got sick. You can't win, can you?

I love it warm & dry. A light, cooling breeze is nice, but no cold drafts, please. Humidity is alright, in moderation.

I'm looking for that place in the US where it never gets colder than 50 and never hotter than 80. If I find it [not California!] I'm moving.

Hawaii awaits you...

yes it is, because that's how I want it to be where I am. And we can't both have it, can we?

I console myself by being pleased we have no mosquitoes - only midgies!! I agree with you though, it would be so lovely to have a constant 20C or so.

"she begins to shiver like a chihuahua" Hah!

San Diego is the place for you. IF you don't mind an occasional earthquake, that is. The weather is pretty steady all year round with only minimal bouts of rain. My sister loves it there.

Those temperatures sound just lovely but I do like a change of seasons -- maybe I'd add in three weeks of intense winter and a brief summer that never goes above 88F.

I loved living in Andalucia since I don't mind the heat .I just go into sloth-mode and take things gently .But then we moved to Holland and I had a brisk reintroduction to the Real World.
Life's much less pleasant in sixteen layers of tickly wool and weirdly flammable fleece .Not to mention all the planning and preparation involved not to get frostbitten fingers on a ten-minute bike ride to the shops!

Ha---IF you find that perfect place, let me know.. I'll move with you... I hope your hubby does find some land down here... We usually don't have as hot a summer as we did this year... And the winters usually are not too bad... Who knows though????

I wish you were here RIGHT NOW though... Our weather the past couple of days has been PERFECT... Temps in the 70's with beautiful blue skies and no humidity...

Hugs,
Betsy

I don't think it's too much to ask at all. I'd like the same thing, in fact. Had to laugh at the thought of you at work with a wool muffler around your neck and your bare arms waving in the breeze. Talk about dressing for the weather. Great post, June!

The only place I've ever been that has the climatic qualities you mentioned was San Diego California. I have the same temperature sensibilities you have. I could so easily live in San Diego--if it were on the coast of Maine.

You wouldn't be thrilled to live where I do, in southern Ontario. -15C in January is pretty balmy, although, if the wind comes up it can feel quite nippy.

Having had a hectic summer I am only just catching up on blogs to be read! Now weather is my priority, I like it warm, but not humid, occasionally breezy but not windy, so my second home is on Tenerife in the middle of the Atlantic. I spend my winters there as it is the land of eternal spring. Might nip back to England at Christmas for a bit of snow and festivity,. Then it's back to the eternal spring. Nice Atlantic breezes on the East side of the Atlantic - any help! Patrick
