Freedom on the hoof

Yesterday afternoon, I stepped out the back door at work to take a moment. The rear of the building is surrounded by hayfields.
Some movement caught my eye: a big doe running and leaping down the snowy hill toward the two-lane county road. She had a good distance to go before she got there, but I worried for her until I saw her, a few minutes later, alternately walking and trotting back up toward the woods.
I had heard no sound that might have startled her; I was far far away, and quiet, so I doubt that I was the cause of her flight.  I think it's still hunting season but I feel sure that she wasn't pursued by hunters or I would have seen her drop out there in the huge open field.

Maybe she was just enjoying her day.
She certainly improved mine.

Yesterday I saw the mother doe and her two young deer that visited our field all summer. I was relieved to know they had survived the hunters!
Enjoy your day June!

That would TOTALLY make my day! I hope they all stay safe, warm, and fed this year.

I hope she keeps right on frolicking through to Easter and beyond. I hate the sound of gunfire in the white quietness.

What is this obsession with shooting animals? Do people eat them afterwards or is is just a cruel sport?

Isn't it amazing what such a sight does for our inner well being? Such grace and beauty - almost in your back yard!

I've seen several of "my" deer wiped out by the side of the road by deer/car disasters. Breaks my heart. This girl is safe from that so long as she stays up on her hill.

It's a poor community; the hunters and their families do eat what they kill, and they need the food. For that reason I've grown accustomed to the idea of hunting. But still, I would not like to have seen her demise.

Bonnie, yes...the grace and beauty and sheer joie de vivre! Watching her out there running around, seemingly for the sheer joy of running gave me a gift that I needed right then.
I could almost feel her exhilaration.

Beautiful creatures, I love watching them but have to admit I like eating them too, but it is rare that I have venison.

Sometimes a deer will wander into my yard - I hold my breathe watching. Such a graceful and temporary sight! I bet you felt refreshed when you went back to work.

LH, I've only eaten venison once, disguised in tomato sauce with onions and peppers.

SJ, thanks for coming by. The deer change color with the seasons. That picture is the grayish-brown winter color, to match the leafless trees and brush. Perfect camouflage if they stay out of open fields.

Barb, I did feel refreshed! She made me think of the childlike joy of running just because it feels good!
